Background[]
D-Mac was born to JP Gibbs and an unnamed mother. He was adored by his father who wanted to do everything he could to be in his life. However, his mother took him away after JP came out of the closet.
As a result, D-Mac became a young man who was raised by the streets of Chicago’s Southside. His mother was barely around before ultimately leaving, while he also grew to resent his father for supposedly leaving him.

In Storm Clouds, he once more attacks his father's business but JP confronts him and demands answers. While his friend wants to run, D-Mac is angry that JP does not recognize him. He shoots a pole light and runs off.
During This is Who We Are, he is tasked by Jenard Sampson to watch Tommy Egan (who unknown to both is D-Mac's uncle) and is paid for the job. After following him, D-Mac spots something unexpected, Tommy speaking to JP at the house of their grandmother. He is confused by the sight and runs off in shock. He tells Jenard he can't do the job and returns his money before leaving.
In He Ain't Heavy, D-Mac is waiting at a corner before Tommy walks by and without looking, questions him on what he wants. D-Mac is impressed that Tommy could tell where he was and says he needs some work because he is out of CBI. Tommy questions on what use he could be to him, and the young man says he's good at math. He is able to prove himself by correctly answering math questions Tommy gives him. He also impresses him by adding math to the drug game. Tommy then tells him that he may have a spot for him in his organization, to his joy. That night, D-Mac inspects his secret case and places money in it before heading out. Unknown to him, he was secretly followed by Tommy who upon investigating the box discovers that D-Mac is the son of JP, his half-brother. Tommy is shocked to realize that D-Mac is his nephew.
During Trust, he is approached by Marshall who reveals Jenard tossed him out of the dealings with his cousin. He apologizes to D-Mac and the latter accepts, offering him the chance to work with him and Tommy. The two take a duffle bag of dahlia to Marshall's cousin and promise more if he rejects Jenard, he agrees but threatens them if they don't honor the arrangement. D-Mac tells Tommy of this, and he is upset, as D-Mac thought he would be happy. However, Tommy is livid and reveals he is aware of D-Mac shooting up JP's club and JP is his father. D-Mac is greatly shocked that Tommy knows but is speechless when Tommy reveals he is his uncle, JP's brother. D-Mac storms out and Tommy finds him sitting on a curb, as they discuss the scenario and D-Mac voices how he didn't know he had an uncle. They decide to tell JP, wondering how he'll handle it and D-Mac states he won't call him "Uncle Tommy". Not too soon, a car pulls up and Tommy pushes D-Mac out of the way after it starts shooting but Tommy is able to shoot one of the passengers and the car flees. D-Mac calls out to Tommy, calling him Uncle Tommy and reveals he was shot in the stomach, as Tommy carries him to safety. While he was at the hospital, Tommy tells JP who D-Mac is and the latter goes to see his son.
