Trivia[]
- The term "ghost in the machine" refers to Rene Descartes' own theory of mind-body dualism, which describe the mind (the ghost) as existing separately from the physical body (the machine), and was coined by philosopher Gilbert Ryle as a criticism of Descartes' theory,[1] which Ryle viewed as a misleading view of human consciousness and behavior.[2]
- The "ghost" in the title could doubly refer to James St. Patrick's, or Ghost's consciousness, and possibly indicates it is living within Tariq, the "machine". Notably, the promotion for this season pays homage to Power's third season, which has the tagline "ghosts never die", and this season itself has the tagline of "like father, like son."
- Courtney Kemp described in 2022 how Ghost lives on in Tariq: "You know, a lot of you guys are constantly talking about Ghost's coming back, and without going into like super detail, what I will definitely say is that part of why I started writing this show is about my father's death. I think a lot of you guys know that. And the thing about that and what I'm really trying to kind of demonstrate is that Tariq is Ghost on earth. Tariq is Ghost alive. He is learning things and changing before our very eyes. Just as Michael Rainey is as an actor getting deeper and better and he's so amazing and I know you guys are seeing that. Tariq is a man. He's growing into a man, and so— I mean my dad's not here but I like to say, I like to think that I'm his representative on earth that his story is still continuing through me."[3]
- Similarly, it also refers to Monet's "ghost" living within Diana, as Diana's Season 4 description states that she finds herself morphing into her mother by the end of the season.
- The underlying theme of this episode is whether the sins of the parents are really visited upon their children, which is also the overarching theme of the series.
- Tariq ends up resembling his father, as does Diana with her mother. Meanwhile, Dru pursues legitimacy and quits the drug game altogether, indicating a departure from his parents and therefore challenging that notion.

- This episode marks the second main character death of the season: Noma.
- Noma and Monet, this season's major deaths, were both the matriarchs of their respective family businesses.
- Tariq, Davis, and Dru are the only main characters to "win" the series, with all of them achieving what they want in life, whereas...
- Monet dies under Noma, and posthumously fails to take all her children out the game, with only one leaving it.
- Brayden fails to have his own drug business as Tariq takes over it and demotes him to his employee, when he was his partner beforehand.
- Cane is a fugitive.
- Diana becomes hardened and is a shell of what she used to be as she now resembles the person she did not want to be like in any way, her mother.
- Effie is forced in the game and out of Stanford.
- Noma fails to protect her daughter from the game, and subsequently dies.
- Detective Carter is imprisoned and exposed for his corruption.
