Kate Egan is a major character in the Power Universe, serving as a supporting character in Power, a minor character in Power Book II: Ghost and a major character in Power Book IV: Force. She is the mother of Tommy Egan and JP Gibbs. She is also the adoptive mother of James St. Patrick. She is portrayed by Patricia Kalember.

She appeared as a mentioned character in season 1 and a central character in season 2-6.

She served as a mentioned character in season 1 and a minor character in season 3 and season 4 in Power Book II: Ghost.

She is a minor character in season 1 and a major character in season 2 of Power Book IV: Force.

History[]

When Kate was 17 years old, she was involved with Herman Gibbs and became pregnant with his child. For reasons unknown, Kate granted Herman full custody of their son JP and left Chicago for New York.

While in New York, Kate was involved with mobster Tony Teresi despite him being married. She got pregnant with their son Tommy Egan, who was born Tommy Teresi. Kate wanted Tony to leave his wife and be with her often circling around their house to see if he would leave. Eventually Tony called off the affair and Kate never saw him again and out of resentment she changed her sons name to hers and lied to him that his father was dead. She also never informed Tommy that he had a half-brother out in Chicago.

She and Tommy visited her mother Miriam on various occasions, seemingly being close. Eventually, she grew estranged from her mother and lied to Tommy about his grandmother dying.

Season Two[]

When Tommy goes into hiding at his mother's house, after murdering Ruiz's henchman Nomar for having sex with his teenage daughter. Kate hits him over the head thinking he is an intruder. Ghost calls Kate to checks up on her, and Kate lures Ghost into going to her house, by Tommy's orders. After Ghost hangs up, Kate tries to tell Tommy that Ghost would never betray him for Angela and would always have his back.

When hearing that Tommy is arrested and is in jail, Kate tries to get him to flip so that her house won't be taken away. Tommy refuses which led to an argument, and Kate leaves.

Season Three[]

Kate goes to see Tommy and his girlfriend Holly Weaver who she does not like while Holly is disturbed by her drug usage. When Kate learns about Ghost and Tommy's rift, Kate reminds Tommy that Ghost has always had his back, as well as defending him throughout his childhood. Kate tells Holly about Tommy being bullied for being the only white kid in a black neighborhood, until Ghost beat up the two boys that was bullying him. Which lead to no one bothering Tommy ever again. Tommy decides to talk to Ghost and restore their friendship.

Season Four[]

Kate is worried when Tommy questions her on Tony Teresi, a man claiming to be his father. As well as telling his mother about Teresi telling him where they met as well as him liking "red heads" like him. Kate tells Tommy that his father is dead and Teresi is lying. However, when Tommy returns to Kate's home and he shows a picture of Teresi holding Tommy as a baby, as well as recognizing the house they use live in before they moved to Queens. Tommy demands Kate to tell the truth, and she finally reveals that Teresi is his father. Kate reveals that Tony came by her house one day and visited Tommy and she was the one who took the picture. Kate tells Tommy that Teresi told him that he would be back in an hour but never returned. Kate tells Tommy that Tony left them with nothing and is not to be trusted. Tommy angrily leaves Kate's house.

Kate later visits Tony in prison, surprising him before he greets her mockingly. After she tells him to stay away from Tommy to which they both agree, he is unfazed. Kate threatens to tell his wife Connie about their affair and having a child outside their marriage, which makes him angry and he watches her leave angrily.

When Tommy comes over to find his birth certificate, Kate tries to stop Tommy from visiting Teresi. She is scared when Tommy starts acting threatening to her and reminded her what he did to Holly. Out of fear Kate finally tells Tommy where his real birth certificate is. When Tommy finally sees it, he is shocked that Teresi was at the hospital, on the day Kate gave birth to him, and that Tony gave Tommy his last name. Kate confesses to Tommy that Teresi was going to take him away from her, and had Connie raise Tommy as her own son because she can't have kids. Out of fear that Kate was going to lose Tommy, she changed his name and gave him his grandfather's name. Tommy is furious at Kate and thinks that his life could have been different if Teresi was around. Tommy takes back the cocaine that he gave her and tells Kate to stay away from him for good.

Season Five[]

Afterwards, Tommy and Kate finally talk, and Tommy reveals to Kate that Teresi is getting released from prison. When Kate asks Tommy what Teresi wants in return, Tommy tells her nothing. Kate warns Tommy that Teresi is the devil and he is going to betray him. Tommy reassures her that he won't but Kate tells him that she will be there for him when he learns about Teresi's true intentions. Kate calls Tommy to spend time with him but is angry when she finds out that Teresi is with him as well as having dinner with him and Connie. Kate storms over to Teresi's house and causes a scene at their dinner, to which Teresi and Tommy kick Kate out the house. Later Tommy storms over to her mother house and in her bedroom. When Kate see's Tommy sad she ask him what happened. Tommy tells her that she was right about Teresi all along. Kate hug and console a crying Tommy. Tommy reveals to Kate that he killed his father, and Kate assures Tommy that he did the right thing.

Season Six[]

Kate goes to Tommy's house and meets his new girlfriend LaKeisha Grant, who is Tasha's best friend. Kate is not particularly welcoming of her and wonders if she can handle Tommy's lifestyle. However, Kate gains respect for her after Keisha's son comes over crying about bullies and Kate is amazed when Keisha goes to handle the situation in a way she would do.

During It's All Your Fault, she believes that he was the one who killed James, despite his protests. Kate gives Tommy a letter that James sent before she cut ties with him telling him to go to California because James left her some money.

Power Book II: Ghost[]

Kate does not appear in the series but in the season finale, Tommy steals her car and crashes it into a gas pump to fake his death after being chased by the FBI.


Power Book IV: Force[]

In A Short Fuse and a Long Memory, while in Chicago, Tommy meets his maternal grandmother Miriam and learns that his mother lied of her status. Miriam was pleased to see him after he showed her a picture of them. It is also revealed Kate has another son named JP Gibbs who was raised by his father and was under the belief Kate was dead. Tommy confirmed she was alive but dead to him, showing he officially cut ties with her.

She is repeatedly mentioned by JP on wanting to find out who has been supplying Miriam Egan with medical expenses and well care but Tommy always refused to make contact with her.

In He Ain't Heavy, Miriam Egan died in the hospital and JP wanted to contact Kate to let her know about her mother but Tommy refused still resentful to her. At the end of the episode, JP contacts Kate while letting her know it is her son, leaving her shocked.

During Trust, JP tells Tommy that he called Kate and told her about Miriam, causing Tommy to become upset about his act.

In Family Business, Tommy returns to his grandmother's home and finds damage to the walls, before he hears a noise. Tommy investigates and discovers a burglar, threatening them at gunpoint until he sees its Kate who says the house was hers before she sees its just Tommy. Kate is not surprised to find her son is still alive and explains that her mother had money hidden in the walls, before stating she wanted to see JP. Tommy tells her that his brother is broke and gives her money, since she was after that. However, she voices she wants to see JP and is greatly shocked to hear that JP is with his own son at the hospital. Kate is stunned to find out she is a grandmother and begs Tommy to take her to see them, because she wants to connect with them. At the hospital, she shares a hug with her oldest son and meets her grandson Darnell "D-Mac" McDowell, briefly commenting that he slightly resembles her and is happy that he will be okay. While talking to Tommy, D-Mac voices surprise that Kate is his family before they talk. At the end, she is seen bonding with her now reunited family.

Notes[]

  • It is unknown how she reacted to hearing Tasha took the blame.
  • She has lied to Tommy about two relatives being dead his father and grandmother while also never telling him of his half-brother.
  • Despite being angry that Tommy seemingly killed James, she appears to have gotten over it in the Force series.
  • Besides 2-Bit and Liliana, she is one of the few recurring characters from the original series to make an appearance in a spin-off.
  • Both Tommy and JP speculate that Kate may have more children.
